Sharing the Hate, Spreading the Pain: On Droning

by on Jan.03, 2008, under Articles, Sharing the Hate

Discontent is the first step of progress of a man.

Typically, upon this time of the year, the general masses here in the United States start to reflect for several reasons.

The first reason is that people have time on their hands as most businesses have shut down for the remainder of the year allowing people to take time out and relax with their overtly stressful home situations. Even if your business did not shut down, you enjoyed several days off to celebrate your holidays of choice. Enough time passes during this period to allow for a moment of change.

The second reason is society pretends it ends each December, and starts over in January giving each person a chance to redeem themselves, atone for sin, and resolve themselves against future transgressions. Again, enough time passes as people pause in life to allow for a moment of change. Shame it only takes an epiphanatic moment to spur a change. Without such a moment, people cannot wait to get back into the swing of things as the boredom sets in.

By mid January, all is forgotten as people continue to drone in their pathetic existence. Droning and wasting time in life is what some people call living. Since ‘living’ leads to blind mindless consumerism, then droning is a great gateway into living life today as any marketer would lead you to believe.

There are several mechanisms to help you drone through life with television, computers, video games, movies, the gym, bicycling, and cooking just to name a few. In case you need assistance in droning, just simply pick up a newspaper, pay attention to your ‘sponsored links,’ and turn on the television. There will be several gateways to enhance your life for just a brief moment in time for only a short amount of money down.

Time moves faster as people start to drone through life. They are able to tune out the simple pleasures and focus on the nothingness. These “clock-watchers” become miserable people, which only become more miserable or blank and indifferent as time goes by. Some people are content to just sit by and let life pass by. They are reluctant to change a bad situation, since the unknown could possibly become worse. Instead, they become hollow shells and slaves to routines.

The next time you hear someone say that this month/year went by quickly, you can be assured that you are talking to someone who lives in a boring routine for the sake of being in a routine. You can either join in their routine for fun, or find a different group of people to hang out with such as the discontent.

The discontent, akin to modern day anarchists, could be a dangerous lot who through their unsatisfied ways will push towards new horizons, or at least attempt to push towards new horizons. They become dangerous when they involve others for the sake of stirring up trouble to watch drama unfold. These people are just trying to end their boredom, and if your group does not react to them, they will move on to another group. Anarchy for the sake of anarchy is a childish game for the immature.

The other category of discontent are the greatest thinkers, doers, and movers in society. Since they do not sit still, and will not allow themselves more than a mere moment to reflect in that happiness they push the bounds and limits.

While one cannot stop aging, by not droning they can slow down time. These people ask how they can make their situation different and better. Then these people act on them bringing about change. The process of making conscience decisions slows down the passage of time, because the mind processes the new stimuli.

To them, change happens not once a year in December, but everyday, and most hours. Keep that in mind as you foolishly jot down the top ten things you wish you could do better, and then forget to follow through with once you back to work on Wednesday.
