Nerds With Beer: Ybor City and the Curse of the Golden Fraggle

by on Sep.28, 2007, under Articles, Nerds With Beer

Written by Kat, syndicated Nerds With Beer Writer

Purple Haze

It has come to pass, (much to my surprise for it’s not like I haven’t been trying new beers or anything) that two months have gone by without a new review. Oh for shame! I shall attempt not to let such a travesty occur again.
At any rate, last night I found myself in the presence of greatness… and not such greatness. I had decided to make a trip over to Tampa because for some crraazzzyyy reason I wanted to drive for 4 hours. Call it the urge to contemplate perhaps. Call it the urge to visit a relatively new-to-me city and taste some beers from their bars. Call it boredom. Call it what you will. Call me call me when you need a frie-… ok I will stop.

First we shall start with (continue reading…)

Why we chose:The Skatom Bombs – Those that truely know me, know I’m very passionate about big band, swing, and crooners from the 30’s and 40’s. That movement died with Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Frankie Laine when people born during World War II rebelled against their parents. The answer to the grunge movement in Seattle was a brief revival from the punk scene in big band, and ska was reborn in the 90’s. It died again, oh I still miss my Zoot Suit Riots, and 30 piece bands. Where am I going with this why we choose? Well, Ska is making yet another comeback, and it’s in the hXc genre this time. Best of both worlds if you ask me. Time to compare traditional ska with skacore. Starting first with West Coast traditional ska artist The Skatom Bombs.Safety – This was a record label showcase show, and they were the strong headliners on the label. Everyone else was either touring, or just auditioning for the label. As the draw and the headliner, they had to pull up the anchor and pull in the crowds. You can’t see their set, but you can hear their music. Judge for yourself against the rest of the bill tonight, and see how they stood up to the challenge. The Upsiders – They’re Punk, no they’re ska, no they’re punk again. Running the sound board for these guys was a nightmare, but the end product was a fluid set of songs that didn’t all sound the same. And yes, we do have more than 40 listeners. Would you like to know in which Countries?Radio Reset – Well, they didn’t get back to me in time to get an interview in this episode, because they had bigger plans and schemes for the show that night. Since this show was an audition, I really can’t blame them. I did get one of their songs in the episode, so you can listen to a band, that is hopefully signed to a small local Tampa Indie label by now.Flaming Tsunamis – After seeing them live, I’m a HUGE fan of these guys. Imagine Black Metal riffs complete with melodic keys complete with a sax. Now add in not 1, not 2, but 3 HXC screamers that each could be the front man in their own band. Let the chaos unleashed on stage and you have a Flaming Tsunamis of Category 6 proportions.

Note: Tampa Artist Weaksauce would have been a great candidate for this episode having recently come out with a CD, and providing me a demo. Perhaps someone who knows the band (Travis) can contact them, and let them know I am still waiting on permission to play a track from it. Alas, we had to cut our ending song and replace it with something from the CC Mixer library.

Nerds With Beer: Shriner Brock?

Shiner Bock

Written by Kat, syndicated Nerds With Beer Writer

It was Friday night, May 19th when I found myself inside a local Austin bar called Emo’s with some form of new tasty beverage in my hand, begging me to consume it. This tasty beverage was entitled “Shiner Bock”. Such a title scared me at first and three things went through my mind as I heard the name: (continue reading…)
