Psycho-Acoustic Connections & Popular Consciousness

Posted by David on August 18th, 2007

In a slight departure from the technology driven “Geek Outs”, today I will discuss the concepts of Psychological Imprints. There are two main methods of the psychological imprint, Situational Timing and Repetition. Both are very useful in making a lasting, (aka popular) song. Some things you can control, some things you can’t, but providing some guiding force may help your success.

One of the topics, that I bring up occasionally, is that of getting your songs in a multimedia platform, such as video and interactive media (video games). Some may downplay this, but really, it is probably the most effective way to implement the methods here. (more…)

Sharing the Hate, Spreading the Pain: The Posse

Posted by LeoCain on August 16th, 2007

The following passage is the last excerpt from a four piece series on Stage Presence. Sad, but like all good four piece series, they end. Fear not, for there will be prequels, sequels, and tetquels coming. What is a tetquel, you ask? I am not telling.

To sum up all the pieces in two sentences: Your audience is WATCHING you while you play, and you need to keep that in mind when practicing your set. A crowd draws a crowd.

Stage Presence:

1. Engage your audience
2. Stage Theatrics
3. Lighting and Effects
4. The Posse

The Posse:

This passage does not actually talk about your performance, but instead about your perception. Perception is as important as performance, because perception leads to recognition, and recognition leads to longevity.

Why we chose:

Terry Lynn - What isn’t there to say about Terry Lynn? She’s been around the music scene for decades, and always helps out where she can. For several years she hosted an open mic night, and even though she bounces from venue to venue she always pulls through with one of the most successful open mics in all of South West Florida. It is an honor to be able to return the favor to her and place one of her songs in our show. I chose to showcase her music, because she spends so much of her time showcasing others’ music.

Day - Thank you for the most well put together press kit I’ve ever been handed in well over 10 years of working in media. This puppy came with 2 cds, 1 single promo song, 2 8×10 glossy photos, a 2 page bio write up, credentials from some who’s who of independent music, and a logo embossed bright orange folder. Their music backs their presentation as well. Corey, thank you for running out to your car at 2 in the morning to get me the kit.

In Violent Sleep - Raquel’s music rocks. This song was the random cookie found when going through the artist submission forms online. I think she might be local to David or myself, and I’ll have to keep an eye out for her band playing in a town near me. Do yourself a favor and keep an eye out for her band playing in a town near you too.

Mr. Bella - Sometimes I get confused if we state why we choose the featured artist that we choose or not. I’m going to get in the habit of telling you, because if you just spent an hour listening to the episode to catch them, you deserve to know. And in Tampa, the band that promotes the hardest award goes to, Mr. Bella. Easy enough on why we’d choose them, they work their ass off promoting themselves. We are just here to help.

Sharing the Hate, Spreading the Pain: Stage Theatrics

Posted by LeoCain on August 9th, 2007

The following passage is another excerpt from a four piece series on Stage Presence.

To sum up all the pieces in two sentences: Your audience is WATCHING you while you play, and the night is called a SHOW for a reason.

Stage Presence:

• Engage your audience
• Stage Theatrics
• Lighting and Effects
• The Posse

Stage Theatrics:

Every rock band should attend more hip-hop and rap shows. If your response is along the lines of I do not like the music, then you should stop calling yourself a musician. Quit reading now, and just turn back on your WAAA.

The typical rock band stands on stage mortified by the fact that they have instruments in their hand. Their expressionless faces tell the story of four nights a week of practice in a hot and sweaty box and their ability to play these songs in their sleep. They will occasionally move around stage, but never in unison, and rarely interacting with each other. The lead singer will plead with the audience from time to time to get them ‘closer’ to the stage. My response is why should I? What is in it for me?
