Sharing the Hate, Spreading the Pain: On Lighting

Posted by LeoCain on July 5th, 2007

The following passage is an excerpt from a four piece series on Stage Presence. From time to time, I will post one of the pieces, and then make available the entire compilation of work in a limited edition box set complete with my very own magic the quickening LARP cards. Exciting, huh?

To sum up all the pieces in two sentences: Your audience is WATCHING you while you play, and you need to keep that in mind when practicing your set. Playing on stage is very different than that 10 x 15 steel box you rent and live in for what I hope is 3+ nights of practice a week.

Stage Presence:

  1. Engage your audience
  2. Stage Theatrics
  3. Lighting and Effects
  4. The Posse

Why we chose:

Wonderful Johnson: Wonderful Johnson’s songs have been featured in the television shows Smallville, One Tree Hill, Glory Days, and Prey as well as in the HBO broadcast movie Girl Got Moe. With a line up like that, I want TLP added to the list. After listening to a couple of tracks, I could easily see why they were selected by the shows. Tim, change your bio, put us on the list!

Inborn: This track just kicks ass…and I have soft spot for any music that can include a didjeridu.

Slim: Cortez & Pizarro is just a great rock tune with catchy rhythm, and even catchier chorus, that gets stuck in your head…

To the native people's sorrow

Here come Cortez and Pizarro

Hernando and Francisco

Hacked their way to heaven blow by blow

Men of god in Spain they worked for someone else

...in Mexico

teru: teru posts all of his mixes on ccMixter.org and we thought it was an excellent example of sampling/remix. Also, I really dug the message of the spoken word track Everyday Choices from Colin Mutchler.

Shinky: They were the first artist to submit a song from a band that I didn’t recognize. That instantly caught my attention. Needless to say, their timing could NOT have been better when they sent us a song twenty minutes before we finalized the line up. Kyle gets a thumbs up in timing, which is good because he’s a drummer.

How we recorded Episode 1

Posted by David on July 1st, 2007

Making great content is a wonderful concept, but sometimes it is important to share how you make that content.

There is no magic bullet for every situation, but perhaps learning about how we are going about things will help you get started, and learn along with us. I am by no means, an expert, I am just an aggregate of knowledge. If you can help us out, by correcting errors or things you hear that could be tweaked, please Speak out! Send us a comment on an article, or use our contact form, or call in and leave us a voicemail.

One thing to know about our show is that we both are in different cities. This presents a challenge in recording because I have found that we are mostly limited to either telephone or VOIP-type technologies, which do not result in the greatest of qualities. The qualities I have found are basically 8khz, where CD’s tend to be 44.1khz or 48khz. Order of magnitude difference, and you can tell.

So to overcome this challenge, we decided to record our voices independently on each end of the call. That way we can record at high quality and later bring the tracks together.
